Kylie InGold | Fairy and Fantasy Artist Biography | Australia

Kylie InGold
A continuing Journey into the Imagination of a Fantasy Artist

Kylie has been painting Fairies, Angels and the Fantasy World for more than two decades; her fascination began as a little girl when the fairies at the bottom of the garden captured her imagination.

The worlds showcased in her art have fascinated humans for centuries but are often lost in our contemporary hi-tech society and her wish is that by viewing her art we are taken through a journey into our imaginations and we remember our sometimes forgotten child within. A thread of creative magic weaves together the canvas images and transports us to a place where fantasy feels almost familiar.

There are no boundaries in the fantasy world, it becomes as the imagination sees.

It is a wonderful place to be,
To view the world through the
imagination of a child,
To enjoy the brilliance of a rainbow;
Dew on an exquisitely woven web;
A raindrop on a flower petal;
The Fairies

Her work has been licensed and published internationally and appears in private collection and public spaces.
Kylie is a self-taught artist, which in some ways this has allowed her a bohemian like freedom to paint without convention and to explore freely a mystical imagination.

"Self-taught also means that sometimes you don't have a clue what you are doing. I have had many failures, what I also call learning experiences, that's ok, a coat of white gesso, quick sand and start again. My teachers have been old masters paintings from the past, I've spent many hours looking in detail at these artists works and still do, my favourites are the romantic Pre-raphaelites and Bourguereau. I copied and painted some of these to try and work out how they achieved their effects.

I originally began with pen and ink drawings and when I was 18, I purchased my first set of oil paints, my first oil painting was of a fairy that my sister still hangs proudly in her home. I'm surprised you can still see the fairy as I did not know what I was doing and there is hardly any paint on the canvas.

It has been suggested over the years that maybe I 'should' paint a genre more commercial. I was made very aware that there was no market for Fairy or Fantasy Art in Australia at that time, except for children's art, and our only really well known Fairy Artist Ida Rentoul-Outhwaite was at the turn of last century.

Maybe we'd forgotten our inner child in the land downunder. I felt alone in my love of the Fae. I finally succumbed to the pressure and in between painting my fairies, I painted some frogs and other animals, I entered some of these in juried competitions and won numerous 1st and other prizes, I also gradually started to enter some of my fairy and fantasy art into some competitions, in the beginning I couldn't get hung, fantasy art wasn't considered to be 'real art' and then the first time one of my fantasy paintings was hung in an art show, I received a highly commended award.

I became frustrated and bored and made the personal decision that I didn't want to paint what was considered trendy or commercial. I was raising my young family and mostly painted at night when my sons were tucked up in bed, and if I was going to spend time painting, I chose to paint my fairies "I love making their little whimsical, misty worlds, Underwater paradises for my mermaids to swim, with each painting I learned a little more about what I could do with the paint. I was at peace painting my imagination.

In 1996 I launched my first website, or rather a one page site, showcasing my fairies, the Internet was in its embryonic stage. Slowly I started to receive emails from overseas, mostly America and Europe requesting prints of my fairy art, and telling me how much they love fairies. I was completely surprised and very encouraged to keep painting my passion. I started offering prints for sale on my site. My domain http://www.ingoldart.com was registered a few years later and to my amazement offers of publishing and licensing started coming." says Kylie

I was concerned about the merchandising side of my art. Having my art on all sorts of products I felt was a little tacky…. Sometimes, I think maybe this was a mistake.
These days I do a lot more merchandise and licensing, because I actually collect fairies myself as well
and have all sorts of wonderful collectibles.
I never started painting fairies to actually run a business that just happened.
I did a lot of art for free, gave away originals for worthy causes, particularly causes for the environment.

Inspirations:

My main inspiration in art was Ida Rentoul Outhwaite, I spent ages copying her drawings as a young person.
I've tried to keep my own style in my work, but little bits of her creep in...
I still don't feel as though I have developed a true unique style, even after all this time, I am still learning and experimenting.
As I started to paint more and more with oils, the victorian fairy artists and the pre-raphelites became an influence as I studied about their time and their techniques. With the internet I discovered more artists, Brian Froud being one of them, the way he captures light is mesmerising.

My Son Blake 7th June,1987-23rd June,2005

After 11 months of being ill in and out of hospital, my beautiful son passed away just two weeks after his 18th birthday on the 23rd June, 2005.
I love him and miss him so very much.
It is a never get over tragedy. His passing has affected every single cell in my body.
Everything has changed in the twinkling of an eye. The first 700 days after he died is mostly a blur.
I will never be the same again.
I've had no motivation for much of anything, although I did paint...and paint
Canvases full of tears which I have put up on his memorial page..

Memorial Page of paintings for my beautiful Blake
19th March, 2008 designated 1,000 days since Blake passed.

Within 2 months of Blake passing my eldest son Jay lost his best friend Zita she was 25,
so he lost his brother and his best friend.
Then just a short time after that one of my close friends lost her daughter. This has
been a shocking few years.

In 1999 Kylie created first fantasy art digital ebook available for download on the internet.
It is still available for download. Click the picture below to download it if you'd like to have a look
It is rather an old program, as the internet did not have broadband and most people only has 36kbs modems.
This Fairies eBook last updated in 2002
Works on versions up to windowsXP (May work on vista)
It has been downloaded over 10,000 times from my websites.

Listed on http://www.programfiles.com since 2002
Features Automatic installation and setup. When you download it, click the about box it has a really cool rainbow dynamic.
Let it run.File size: 1742kb (about 30 second download with broadband)
Please note: There is mild artistic nudity.

ePrint Digital Downloads

In 2003-2204 Kylie launched the fairystore with eprint digital downloads. She became concerned about the amount of paper and packaging and plastic which was required to send her art around the world.

eprint trademark logo
This was my logo. I thought it was a great idea. In 2004 the idea was just a little bit before its time.
The Eprint site is offline at the present as I need now to have the site in its own domain so as time permits I am giving it a complete overhaul.
You can see some of it here on the webarchive

My Previous WebSites

In the early days of the internet a domain name cost around $300.00 which at the time was out of
my artists budget.I had my website hosted on various servers that came free with my internet connection.
Or available for free online. Most of these free places did not allow you to sell products. So any sales I did were requests via emails.

Some of these I have found on the internet archives.
I will list more as I find them.
I am not able to remember my first one page website in 1996.
I have had new computers since then as well.
I have searched for it, a bit too far back I think it was on tripod.com or fortunecity.com
If you have any archived links to that my original site It would be great to get
the address.

My Geocities Site

I still keep this one as well as it has all the files for my magic viewing window

http://fairies.one.net.au 2000-2001
This site is still live but it is owned by someone else.
It was a subdomain in a new internet compnay that started in Australia
But unfortunately the company went into receivership. All websites were deleted.

http://www.ingoldart.com
2001-current
After fairies.one.net.au went down, I decided that it was time I registered my own domain name.
So in July of 2001 I registered www.ingoldart.com. A successful enterprise.
On the 14th July, 2005 my domain renewal became due and so did my yearly hosting fee.
This was just 2 weeks after my son died. I did not know, as I was not answering emails or even
on my computer. The company deleted everything I think in October of that year.
The universe was kind because I with the help of a friend was able to renew my domain,
and restore my site. It was also very unfortunate because I lost my google rankings.
This site currently points to www.kylieingold.com as it is currently being redone.

http://www.kylieingold.com 2006-current
In August, 2006 I registered my own name as a domain name.
Partly to make sure it didn't get taken by some search marketing engine, and also because
I learnt the hardway, do not keep all your eggs in one basket.

http://www.fairy-artist.com 2007-current
I registered this domain in March, 2007.
I have plans for it.

http://www.australianfairyartists.com 2006-current
Registered in August, 2006.
This is my pet project. A site just for Australian Fairy Artists.
At one time I was the only Australian Fairy artist on the internet.
Now they come from everywhere. It is fantastic, I hope through the site I will be
able to encourage more young artists to follow their dreams.

I have a number of other domains as well, these don't have anything to do with my
fairies and fantasy art. So I will not list them here. Maybe later LOL!
Over the past 12 years of being on the internet and having a computer I have learnt a lot
about website coding and software programming.

I can program now in html, php, mysql, delphi pascal.
I was one of the programmers on the now defunct delphi game components.

I never slept a lot and the days since my son's passing, I don't sleep much at all,
so I decided during this time I may as well work.
